Spatial design for branded environments.

WHAT I DO

I design the physical environments in which companies present themselves: trade fair stands, corporate and public events, galas, launches, brand activations, festival environments, pop-up and retail spaces.

The work runs the whole way. I take the brief, research the business, find the idea the environment should be built on, and carry it into the spatial and visual design — form, materials, light, circulation — through to the guidance a contractor needs to build it.

I work either with full responsibility for the spatial design, or with a defined area of it inside a larger production team. The scope of responsibility changes. The level of the work doesn't. A clearly defined assignment can move from an initial idea to a design package for contractor pricing within a week. Other projects develop in stages alongside a longer production.

HOW I WORK

The core of my work is problem framing and design judgement: identifying what a project really needs to solve and forming a coherent spatial solution from it.

I look at the company, the product, the position and the situation, and find the one thing the design should be built on — the thing that is true for this company and not for any other. That idea gets written down early, in plain terms, before the design itself takes shape. Everything after follows from it: the form language, the materials, the light, what gets left out.

WAYS TO WORK TOGETHER

Spatial design

Full responsibility for the agreed spatial design scope from the brief onward. I find what the environment should be built on by considering the brand, its content and its audience together. They shape how the environment communicates, how people move through it and the experience it is intended to create. From there, I design the space, the materials, the light and the graphics that belong to it. Most stand projects are delivered as a design package built for contractor pricing. Full production-ready drawings are available when a project calls for them. Production requirements and the agreed budget are considered from the start of the design process.

I assess the impact of changes, identify where savings can be made, and make clear when a change begins to compromise the integrity of the design. Responsibility for production, the overall budget and project-level decision-making remains with the client, producer or agency leading the project.

Design development.

A concept exists, or is forming, and it needs to become a space that works and can be built. I read it spatially, resolve it, and reconcile it with everything else the environment has to carry. Involvement is agreed per project: an early spatial read, a return at the point where it has to be solved, or a defined area within a larger team. Throughout that involvement, production requirements and the agreed budget are considered.

WHEN TO BRING ME IN

When the starting point is abstract — a philosophy, a value, a cultural idea — and can't be executed directly.

When a company's current expression doesn't match what the company actually is.

When there is a contradiction in the brief that needs solving rather than smoothing over.

When the environment is about to fragment under everything it has to carry: products, technology, content, several brands at once.

When the level can't slip. A structurally simple space for a demanding brand often takes the most exact judgement.

WHO I WORK WITH

Brands, agencies and production companies in Finland and internationally. Projects have been built across Europe, the Middle East, Brazil and the United States.

Across both direct work and projects commissioned through these partners, I have designed spatial environments for Philips, Helly Hansen, Pernod Ricard, L’Oréal,  Nissan,  Harvia, Konecranes, Wärtsilä and Aalto University.

STUDIO

Design Studio Jalarvo is a one-person studio. I work under my own name and bring in a project team when a build calls for one.

Trained as an industrial designer, with master's-level studies in visual culture at Aalto University, and a background in sdg`s and service design.

START A PROJECT

Got a stand, launch, event or pop-up coming up?

Send the dates and a rough brief and I'll tell you straight away whether it's a fit. If the direction is still open, that's the best time to talk.
